Our True Story

It’s important to talk about why we exist and not just what we do. So, here’s our true story in a nutshell…

‘Cybelle’ Anatolian mother goddess, also worshipped in Greece and the Roman Empire. Ostia, Statue of Cybele. The Great Mother was the goddess who had once given birth to the other gods, to the first humans, to the animals, and to the wild nature. In short: she was the universal mother.

So why Kybelle but not Cybele?

Well the founder of Kybelle whom her childhood friend was suffering from a terminal illness and she vowed that she would own a coffee shop one day and name it after her, and she did.

Her late friend, called Belle, is now forever enshrined in our world, and honoured by each person who leaves our café with a smile.

So, there you have it, the values of loyalty, care and history all mixing to make one beautiful dream come true.

Oh, and one last thing, when you come in you will notice the incredible hand-drawn murals and paintings everywhere. These were crafted from the illustrative imagination of our founder and Street Artist Nick Wakling. She’s quite a woman, and this is quite a café – we hope you love it as much as we do.
